Battle of Iwo Jima

Battle of Iwo Jima

On February 19, 1945, the land invasion of Iwo Jima began. This followed nearly 8 months of air raids; the longest, most intensive shelling of any Pacific island during World War II. Iwo Jima was strategically important as an air base for fighter escorts supporting long-range bombing missions against mainland Japan. Because of the distance between mainland Japan and the U.S. bases in the Mariana Islands, the capture of Iwo Jima would provide an emergency landing strip for crippled B-29s returning from bombing runs. The seizure of Iwo Jima was deemed necessary, but the prize would not come easily. The 36-day assault resulted in more than 26,000 American casualties, including 6,800 dead. Of the 20,000 Japanese defenders, only 1,083 survived. The Marines“ efforts, however, provided a vital link in the U.S. chain of bomber bases. By war“s end, 2,400 B-29 bombers carrying 27,000 crewmen made unscheduled landings on the island. The battle for Iwo Jima is encapsulated by the historic flag-raising atop Suribachi, on February 23, 1945. Now, AMERICAN MINT has issued a limited edition highly detailed commemorative coin in honor of this emotion-stirring event.Up to 5 items per customer

Washington at Trenton

Washington at Trenton

At about eight o“clock on the morning of December 26, 1776, American troops surprised a Hessian picket guard, stationed in houses along the Pennington road about a half-mile outside Trenton. Despite a disorganized show of resistance, the Germans were quickly captured or dispersed. The Americans suffered 4 wounded casualties. It is said that in addition, two American soldiers froze to death. The Hessians suffered 20 killed and around 100 wounded. One thousand Hessians were captured. The effect of the battle of Trenton was out of proportion to the numbers involved and the casualties. The American effort across the colonies was galvanized and the psychological dominance achieved by the British in the preceding year was overturned. Washington“s continuing problem of maintaining the enthusiasm of his army for the war was lessened by his success at Trenton. It proved to be the much-needed encouragement that enabled the American Revolution to continue and would ultimately result in the United States“ independence. Now, we are pleased to offer a coin commemorating the determination of General Washington. AMERICAN MINT is issuing a limited number of these coins that so aptly reflect the strength and commitment of the man who would become the 1st President of the United States.Limitation: 20,000 piecesMaterial: copper-nickelWeight: 32 gramsIssue year: 2000Diameter: 40 mm (Approx.1.6 in.)Quality: Brilliant uncirculatedCountry: LiberiaFace value: 5 DollarsCustomer can only order up to 5 pcs.
